It's a big birthday week in our area, especially for the Bergusons! On February 23, Isabelle celebrated her 93rd birthday, and on March 2, Janet will be 90. March 1st is Luke's 16th birthday. Iris will be celebrating on March 1st as well. Happy “almost-birthday” to Leap Year Babies! One of the privileged few is Barb Slocum of Blossburg, who will be 11 ¼ this year (we'll let you do the math).
Please remember the “Can Art Food Drive” being conducted by Cub Scout Pack 69. Collection boxes are available in several locations until March 8. In Blossburg, they are at the First Baptist Church on Main Street, the Kiwanis Building at Island Park, First Citizens National Bank on Main Street, and at the Holiday Market in the shopping plaza. In Covington, a collection box is waiting for you at the Country Market. During the Scouts’ Pinewood Derby on March 14, the containers of food will be used to create works of art, which will be judged for prizes. Following the derby, all donations will be taken to the Matthew 25 Food Pantry at the Blossburg United Methodist Church. Donate today, and support two good causes!
Winter blues or cabin fever getting you down? Guitarists, harmonica players, horn players, keyboardists, vocalists and everyone who enjoys listening to music are welcome to an open jam session to be held Friday, February 27th from 7 to 10 pm at the Arnot Community Center. Bring your instrument and prepare to have some fun. Light snacks, coffee and tea will be provided (soda and water available in vending machine). No admission charge, but donations (used to assist in covering cost of building use) are appreciated. For more information contact Anne Lo Pinto at yoganne@frontiernet.net or 324-2116.
What’s next for the many volunteers in Tioga County who helped elect President Obama? In keeping with the President’s message of service to the community and organizing for change, a free event will take place on February 28th in Mansfield, at St. James Church Parish Hall on East Wellsboro Street. This “Organizing for America in Tioga County” event begins at 2:00 pm. Come share your ideas on community service projects, involvement in local issues, and how to advance President Obama’s national agenda in Tioga County. Co-sponsored by Progressives and Democrats of the Endless Mountains (PDEMS), a local social club, the meeting is open to all who share President Obama’s vision for America, and want to implement ideas at the local level. Light refreshments will be served. Attendees are asked to bring a grocery item for donation to Seeds of Hope. For more information, contact Frank Salatino at 570-827-2058 or email Franksalatino@stny.rr.com.
A Scrapbook Retreat will be held February 27th and 28th, at the Pennsylvania College of Technology’s North Campus, located just east of Wellsboro on Route 6. Everyone, from beginners to seasoned “scrappers,” is welcome. Start or complete a project, and learn new ideas from other scrappers. Bring: Scrapbooking supplies, pictures, your favorite munchies/beverage (to share), money for cash & carry, your best friend, and enthusiasm! There will also be an exchange table – bring something to exchange or buy an item for 25 cents. There will be plenty of work space, two microwaves, coffee, vending machine, soda machine, and a refrigerator. This event is sponsored by The Rainbow Healers, and benefits American Cancer Society Relay for Life. For more info please call 724-7703.
